It’s the Salthawks for 70 Against Liberal

After a competitive first quarter, the second ranked Hutchinson Salthawks out-scored LHS 56-10 the final three quarters for a 70-17 win over Liberal Friday night at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson. Liberal is eliminated from the playoffs for the second straight year and just the third time in the last 21 years. (Liberal missed in 2000 but went 7-2).

Hutchinson didn’t flinch when LHS quarterback Caleb Wehling found Trenton Hammond on a pump and go route to tie the game with 6:05 to play in the first quarter. Or when Liberal’s Rayce Warden recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Hutch amassed 628 yards and 510 on the ground. Ja’Mon Cotton carred 15 times for 194 yards and four touchdowns. All four of his TD’s came in the first half. Lucas Munds carried 11 times for 120 yards and two scores in the second half.

Liberal trailed 56-7 when Hammond returned a kick 88 yards for a touchdown. Jesse Quintero kicked a 40 yard field goal for the game’s final points. Liberal had 237 yards of offense. Caleb Wehling was 11-24 for 151 yards, one touchdown, but two interceptions.

Liberal played without their leading tackler Michael Sena due to injury.

The 1-7 Redskins play their final game at 1-7 Wichita West Friday night at 7 p.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net. The game is at Wichita Northwest. Hutch is 7-1 and plays at 7-1 Bishop Carroll Friday for the District 8 title.
