Hoisington Principal Files For District 5 Kansas BOE Seat

Hoisington High School Principal Meg Wilson filed for the Kansas State Board of Education, District 5 today. Meg Wilson is a Republican who supports the vision of the Kansas State Board of Education “to prepare Kansas students for lifelong success through rigorous academic instruction, 21st century career training, and character development according to each student’s gifts and talents”.

“ I believe that as educators, we have the greatest opportunity to influence our nation’s future through the leadership and character development opportunities we provide to our youth,” said Wilson. “My vision for educational leadership in Kansas is one of a facilitative approach which allows local school boards to empower the administration, staff, students, and community to be an innovative collegial team. Through allowing districts to identify their needs to serve their student population, local school boards have the opportunity to support administration in providing an engaging curriculum for students as well as school staff to focus not simply that students are taught but to ensure that they learn; to work collaboratively on matters related to learning; and to hold ourselves accountable for the kind of results that fuel continual improvement.”

Wilson has served in the education profession for over 31 years and has currently completed her 4 ^th year serving as USD#431 Hoisington 9-12 High School Principal. Meg’s education experiences include teaching elementary at Smith Center which included coaching volleyball and track, teaching special education for 7-12 for NCKSEC, serving as a Smith Center Board of Education member, and as 7-12 building administration for Rawlins County. Meg believes in fostering an entrepreneurial attitude and supports the guidance department to assist students to be College and Career Ready by integrating their academic, career, and personal development as part of the high school’s instructional program. Through Meg’s passion for developing character and leadership within our youth, she has been intentional in providing staff resources to integrate character development across the curriculum. Under Meg’s administrative leadership, Rawlins County Jr. Sr. High and Hoisington High School have been awarded State Promising Practices in Character Education Awards and have also been recognized as National Schools of Character Promising Practices award winners.

Since 2010, Meg has served as a Co-Chair for the Social, Emotional, and Character Development Standards (SECD) Writing Committee which has local, state, and national support. These standards were adopted by the Kansas State Board of Education in April, 2012. Meg has served as a presenter for KSDE Summer Academies, KSDE Fall Conference, Jostens National Renaissance Conference and is scheduled to present at the Summer School Counselors’ Camp in June, promoting the implementation of the SECD Standards across the curriculum.

“ It would be a sincere honor to serve the people of District 5 on the Kansas State Board of Education,” said Wilson. “I am eager to put my 31 years in education to use in promoting local control of education standards, which will provide our schools in Kansas the ability to be competitive with states throughout the country.”
