Guymon Public School Building Fire

A late night fire at the Guymon Public Schools maintenance shop kept the Guymon Fire Department busy into the night and early morning.

At 10:57pm Friday night, the Guymon Fire Department responded to many 911 calls of heavy smoke in the 700 block of north James. On first fire units arrival they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the back portion of the large maintenance building belonging to the Guymon schools. “In addition to this dangerous fire, we also knew that many hazardous chemicals and equipment were stored in this building”, said scene commander and Assistant Fire Chief Grant Wadley. Guymon Firefighters were able to quickly position themselves and gain control of the fire within 25 minutes of arrival. Firefighters in the beginning were not able to get into the building due to the heavy fire and smoke conditions that were inside. The heavy billowing smoke condition could be seen from many blocks away which caused neighbors in the area to call 911.

School officials arrived on scene and were able to assists the Fire Department in determining what equipment and supplies were inside at the time of the fire. “Extensive fire and smoke damages were present throughout the building”, Wadley said. Fire damage estimates from this fire are at $100,000.

Preliminary investigation into the cause of this fire is undetermined. Further investigation will be done by the Guymon Public School Police and other school officials. Firefighters remained on the scene till 12:40am assuring no further fire spread was present. No injuries occurred or reported at the scene.

Guymon Fire Department responded with 2 Engines, 1 EMS unit, 1 Rescue unit, and 2 command units. Also assisting at the scene were the Guymon Police Department, Guymon Public School Police, Tri-County Electric, City of Guymon utilities department, and Guymon Emergency Management director.
