Goodwell Pair Arrested On Child Abuse Charges

Two Goodwell residents were arrested Thursday and charged with two counts each of child abuse and child neglect. Randy Olushola Daniel and Ashley Nicole Chavez are in the Texas County Jail in Guymon with bond set at $80,000 each.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, the arrests stem from an incident that took place in Goodwell on Nov. 13, 2011, but was reported in Round Rock, Texas on Nov. 16, 2011.

Williamson County, Texas EMS responded to a 911 call from Daniel Ollestean at 2009 Ridgetop Drive in Round Rock. Upon arrival, EMS found a then-23 month-old female child with burns to the right side of her face, and transported her to Dell Children�??s Hospital in Austin. Daniel and Chavez are the girl�??s parents.

EMS documented injuries to the child�??s face, including second-degree type-2 burns above her right eyebrow; a cyst just to the left of the burn; three small second-degree type-2 burns to the bridge of the child�??s nose; second-degree type-2 burn to the right eyelid, and most of the left eyelid was covered with a second-degree type-2 burn.

The Texas EMS also documented a second-degree type-2 burn just to the left of the mouth that was 1-inch in width and about a half-inch tall, as well as a second-degree type-1 burn on the left side of the chin and below the mouth.

All of the right side of her face was covered with second degree type-2 burns which wrapped around her right ear. Most of the burns were in the early stages of healing.

The child�??s father gave various accounts as to how the child received the injuries �?? saying that homemade hot sauce, battery acid from his hands, a wall heater or his own sister might have caused the injuries.

Three children �?? the girl, a 3 year-old boy and a 9 month-old boy �?? lived with Daniel and Chavez on the Oklahoma Panhandle State University campus. Daniel was a basketball player for OPSU but was ineligible. He said that when he got back from a basketball game on Nov. 13, he asked Chavez where the girl was, and that Chavez stated she was in bed. When he checked on the girl, he noticed burns on the child�??s chin and cheek.

According to the affidavit, Daniel stated that he asked Chavez what happened and Chavez said she did not know, but that her sister had been cleaning the house, and either cleaning chemicals or steam from a steam vacuum may have burned the child.

According to Chavez�??s sister, Daniel and Chavez did not want to take the child to the local hospital for fear that Child Protective Services might become involved. She also stated that Daniel wanted the girl taken out of state.

Ollestean told Child Protective Services in Austin that she traveled to Goodwell to pick up the child, but later changed her story and said that her daughter, Adekemi Logan, traveled to Goodwell on Nov. 14, picked up the child and returned to Round Rock early on the morning of Nov. 15.

Once Texas Child Protective Services became involved, Daniel and Chavez went to Austin and were interviewed. Prior to that, they took the two other children to relatives in San Angelo, Texas. CPS officials in San Angelo got an emergency custody order to take the boys and return them to Goodwell.

The boys were examined in San Angelo, and the 9 month-old was found to be malnourished, weighing just 9 pounds, 1 ounce. X-rays of the boy also revealed several broken ribs in various stages of healing.
The boys were put into foster care on Nov. 17, 2011.
