Giraffe Dies At Lee Richardson Zoo

KSCB News - October 19, 2010 12:00 am

A female giraffe has died at a

southwest Kansas zoo, just days after her third and youngest calf

was transferred to a zoo in Chicago.

13-year-old Penny died Friday

at the Lee H. Richardson Zoo, her home of seven years.

Zoo director Kathy Sexson says Penny was found in her stall

early Friday, unable to rise. The giraffe had been getting

treatment for an arthritic knee.

Sexson says Penny had been eating and moving normally the night

before. But giraffes can undergo a hypertension shock reaction when

they lie on their sides for any length of time.

Penny’s 2-year-old son, Hasani, was moved Wednesday to Chicago’s

Brookfield Zoo. The only giraffe remaining at the Garden City zoo

is Shingo, who had sired Penny’s three calves.
