Early Morning Fire Destroys Guymon Home

KSCB News - February 8, 2013 10:10 pm

Guymon firefighters were rousted early when a call came in at 12:15 a.m. A residence was on fire at 706 S. Crumley in Guymon.
Assistant Fire Chief Dean McFadden said the occupants of the home are lucky to be here.
“When we arrived, the home was fully engulfed with flames,” McFadden said. “There were flames coming out of every window and door.”
Although the home is a total loss, McFadden said it could have been much worse.
“They didn’t have a smoke alarm,” he explained. “They told us that they were awakened by the heat of the fire.”
Five people were in the home at the time of the blaze. They were checked out at the scene by EMS; however, none of them required medical treatment and were not transported to the hospital.
“Because there were no smoke alarms, it could have very easily been a fatality situation,” McFadden said. “Smoke detectors save lives – every home should have one. The last thing we want is for someone to lose their life.”
The fire was so intense, according to McFadden, that a home next door also sustained some damage from the heat.
Firefighters took steps to protect that home and a car that was parked nearby.
“When we were able to determine that all occupants were gotten out of the home safely, we took a defensive attack mode on the blaze,” McFadden said, adding that “the cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
Fourteen firefighters responded to the scene. They were aided by Guymon Police Department and officials from the Red Cross, Tri-County, City of Guymon Water and Gas, and Texas County Emergency Management.
