Crusader Wins National Silver Medal

KSCB News - February 1, 2011 3:28 pm

The Crusader staff at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School recently received news that the paper had been named silver medalist in a national competition.
The award to the student newspaper was based on six spring 2010 Crusader issues that were submitted to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for critique.
??Because the Columbia Scholastic Press Association is a prestigious association, I am really proud of the Silver Medalist Award and the work of the staff, ? said Crusader adviser Anita Reed. ??It takes a lot of work for the editors to go above and beyond to the quality of work it takes to win these awards. I just appreciate the time and pride that they put into the publications. ?
The contest is based out of Columbia University in New York, Reed said. ??It is one of the oldest journalism contests in existence. The judges can be from all over the United States and are selected for their knowledge in the field. ?
Morgan Allaman of Liberal was the editor-in-chief when the award-winning work was done.
Current Crusader editor Alfredo Anaya of Liberal, co-editor with Dana Loewen of Meade, was a Crusader reporter and photographer in the spring 2010 was also pleased with the award.
??I am proud that all of our hard work ended up paying off, and the award really shows that, ? Anaya said. ??We had a lot of good writers that were willing to go that extra mile to get their work done and that was reflected in the publication. ?
Reed explained the judging is anonymous and the paper receives a written critique along with the certificate.
In the overall comments, the judge praised the staff ??s writing, news section and sports and offered critiques mainly on design elements of the issues.
??Overall, you have a strong paper for a two-year college ??very strong, ? the judge stated. ??It is evident your staff works hard to produce a professional product. ?
Reed said she was happy that the writing of the staff was recognized.
Last year the staff, Reed explained, had several students who really enjoyed the craft of writing, which showed up in the critique.
For submitting an entry for the overall judging to the CSPA, the Crusader staff will now have a chance to enter 50 individual entries of student work for judging later in the year.
