Cloud Brings Saints Down to Earth

KSCB News - April 21, 2014 7:12 am

Eighth place Cloud handed Seward their worst day yet. In a must win situation, Seward allowed 23 runs and 30 hits as the Thunderbirds rose from the ashes to sink Seward 11-4 and 12-9 Saturday at Brent Gould Field. The Saints fall into fifth in the Jayhawk West and at this rate will have to travel in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament May 3 and 4.

In game one, Cloud chased starter Keenan Hall after one and two-thirds innings. The T-Bird struck for one in the first, three in the second, three in the sixth, and four in the seventh of the seven inning game. John Solberg hit a home run in the loss for his second of the season. Seward’s two errors were costly allowing only three earned runs.

In game two, Cloud chased starter Pete Macke after two and two thirds innings. Seward actually got off to a decent start scoring three in the first and two in the second. Cloud scored two in the second so it was 5-2 Saints into the third. The T-Birds scored three to tie it in the fourth. They added two in the sixth to lead 7-5 and blew it open with five in the ninth to make it 12-5. Meanwhile, Seward was scoreless in six consecutive innings against a Cloud starter who came in 1-3 with a 9.11 ERA. Jordan Leinweber was 3-5 with a triple, double, and single and two RBI’s. Jake Fuller was 3-5.

The Saints are tied for fourth but lose the tiebreaker with Colby so they are actually in fifth place at 15-13 in the Jayhawk West and 27-23 overall. Cloud is 14-29 and 9-19 in the conference. Seward plays at Frank Phillips on Wednesday and travels to Butler Saturday and Sunday for 1 p.m. games on 1270 and kscbnews.net.
