Citizenship Classes at SCCC/ATS Accepting Students

KSCB News - August 7, 2015 11:26 am

It’s one thing to live in a community you call home, and something more to have a say about local, state and national government. Citizenship classes that begin Aug. 16 at Seward County Community College/Area Technical School will help eligible legal permanent residents prepare to become U.S. citizens.
The college has offered Citizenship Classes for more than 20 years, said Director of Business & Industry Norma Jean Dodge.
"We always have a full class of 16 to 20 students in both the fall and the spring semesters," she said. "It’s a good thing for the community, and for the people who take the class."
Citizenship Classes run in weekly sessions from 1-5:30 p.m. every Sunday, starting Aug. 16 and continuing through Dec. 13. Cost for the semester is $100 per person.
Veteran teacher Elva Morales will lead students through material needed to prepare for the United States naturalization process. The class addresses the application procedure, American government and history, the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interview procedure.
"This class covers a lot of information – I think some of us who are already citizens could use a refresher – and it gives people the opportunity to become a citizen and vote," said Dodge. "It’s important for people to have a voice, to be part of the process of democracy."
As one of the few locations in the region to offer Citizenship Classes, SCCC/ATS always has a full roster for the sessions, Dodge said. Spots are still open for the fall semester.
