Change Evident in Guymon

KSCB News - August 26, 2009 12:00 am

The Guymon Tigers are trying to forget last year. GHS didn’t win a game despite making the playoffs the previous two seasons. Joe Litsch comes to Guymon after six years as head coach and offensive coordinator at Hobart. Litsch says the Tigers are starting over. “Everything’s new,” Litsch said. “There’s always challenges in football. I always say he who dwells in the past is lost for the future waits for no man so we’re not talking about last year. We’re attacking it from this year’s point of view. What’s done is done. We can’t change it so we’re going on.”

Litsch brings a ground oriented option based offense to the Panhandle. “We’re very fortunate here at Guymon High School because we have a great coaching staff,” Litsch said. “Coach Davis has run the triple, the mid-line, and the outside veer option so we got him up here to coach. I just think you have to run the ball.”

Colter Headrick move from running back to quarterback. He says there has been an adjustment period. “It was kind of rough at first,” Headrick said. “But I’m going to get the hang of it. Coach has been there to help me. He’s been really great for us.” Headrick says the option will work. “I love it,” Headrick said of the option. “We’ve got the right tools for it. We’re pretty fast. We’re not too big but we’ll just run you out of your seats.”

Senior center/nose guard Dakota Wilson says he sees a different approach this year. “We’re more of a team than we ever have been,” Wilson said. “I think that’s going to take us a long way. We’ve worked harded than we ever have since I’ve been here and we have a quarterback who knows what he’s doing.”

Senior wr/cb Michael Nguyen says the “3-4” defense should be effective. “We have a good defense,” Nguyen said. “We have good linebackers. We’ve been switching out people. Everything is basically the same as last year but we’re better.”

Senior outside linebacker Raul Carrillo, what do enjoy most about the Guymon defense? “My position,” Carrillo answered. “When we call our strength left or right, I’m on the opposite side so I don’t have a tight end. Most the time I can get in there and get my nose dirty and get some sacks so it’s all good.”

Senior rb/olb Kolton Renteria is another key Tiger. Litsch and several Tigers will be featured during the Sportsguys Wednesday morning between 7:37 and 9:00 on Talkradio 1270 and kscb.net.
