Cathey’s Buzzer Beater Sinks Hays

KSCB News - February 12, 2011 6:40 am

The Hays-Liberal boys basketball game continues to live up to the hype. For the third time in five years, the Liberal-Hays boys basketball game in Liberal ended with a buzzer beater. Marquez Patterson won it for Liberal in 2008, Selby won it for Hays in 2007, and Jade Cathey swished a 30 footer at the buzzer Friday night in front of a big homecoming crowd at the Big House for a 44-41 LHS win over Hays. "It felt good," Cathey said of his last second shot. "I tell Tyson and Slader, if I set my feet, it’s going in." Cathey’s shot came after Hays tied the game with five seconds left on the clock. Liberal led 41-36 with 56 second left. But Trey Herman nailed a left wing three pointer to make it 41-39. Liberal got the ball back but turned it over setting the stage for Hays to tie and Cathey to win it. Hays led 15-14 at halftime and 27-26 after three quarters. Cathey scored all 15 of his points in the second half. DeVondre Livingston added 12 and Tyson Deaton had 10 points and many rebounds. He held 6’5" 250 pound Zack Gaughn to 11 points. He averages 17 a game. Liberal is 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the WAC. Hays is 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the WAC. Liberal plays at Guymon Monday night at 8 p.m. on Talkradio 1270 and kscbnews.net.
