The Seward County American Cancer Society Relay For Life event will be held at Light Park from 7:00 PM Friday, July 11 through 7:00 AM Saturday, July 12.
This is a fun filled all night event designed to bring attention to the plight of cancer victims who have succumbed to this terrible disease or who have fought and won the battle. Teams of 3 to 20 participants will have campsites scattered around the park and some will be offering various things to purchase for a donation. Proceeds from this event are used for education, advocacy, research and patient needs.
MC Stanley Cordova will start the event with the Opening ceremony followed by introduction of cancer survivors and their caregivers, who will then make a lap around the track. After this committee members and team captains will be introduced and everyone will make a lap, followed by one member from each team on the track all night.
Don Friesen (620-655-8319) has an entertaining line up of performers ready to wow you all evening. At 10:00 PM, the luminarias lining the track in memory or honor of loved ones who have battled cancer will be lit and a very moving Luminaria ceremony will be held with singing, poetry and reading of the names on the luminarias. If you would like to purchase a luminaria, call Karen Crotinger at 620-370-1084. At midnight there will be a Zumba contest (call Stanley at 620-655-5134) between three or four Zumba studios, followed by Zumba lessons by Extreme Fitness.
Jacki Sherrell has a long list of games planned all night including a dunk tank, inflatable jump house, 3 on 3 basketball, sand volleyball, slat races, hula hoop relay, frozen tee shirt contest, face painting, water balloon toss, pedometer race. This will all be culminated by a 5K @ 5AM Saturday morning. Call Jacki at 620-655-5420 to register ($10) or for more information.
Beginning at 5:30 PM there will be an awesome concession stand manned by the Cottonwood/VFW team. There will be a Silent Auction of baskets made up by each team. DJ Smitty will be there to spin some music all night long.
To kick all this off, there will be a dinner on Thursday, July 10 at El Rancho Exotica catered by SJK Events for cancer survivors and a caregiver. If you are a cancer survivor, please call Brenda Mallory at 620-482-1128 to reserve a place.
