Lawrence Dowell: UPDATE
Garnand Funeral Home
Ulysses, KS

Lawrence R. Dowell, age 73, of Ulysses, Kansas died Sunday, February 19, 2012 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas.  He was born April 6, 1938 in Ensign, Kansas, the son of Carl and Mable (Smith) Dowell.

 

Larry married Marie Hageman on September 3, 1960 in Millington, Tennessee.  They moved to Ulysses in March 1973.  Larry was an owner of Ross Heating and Air Conditioning for 24 years and then continued working as a technician.  He enjoyed going antiquing and refinishing furniture; and was an accomplished woodworker.  Larry had a passion for making beef jerky, enjoyed bingo, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson.  Larry served on many boards for the community of Ulysses and attended Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.    

 

He is survived by his wife, Marie of the home; son, Randy Dowell of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter, Terry Crosby of Ulysses, Kansas; brothers, William Dowell, of Dodge City, Kansas, Wayne Dowell of Blue Ridge, Georgia, Kenny Dowell of Dawsonville, Georgia, Leroy Dowell of Gainesville, Georgia, Bob Dowell of Georgia; and sister Ruth Smith of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren and one great-grandson. 

 

Larry is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Floyd; sisters, Leona, Nadine, Bonnie; and granddaughter, Victoria Dowell.

 

Vigil service will be held Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 7:00 PM and funeral mass will be held Friday, February 24, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Trong Binh Tran officiating.  Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79.  Friends may call Thursday, February 23, 2012 from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.  Memorial contributions may be given to the Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church or Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS  67880.
