Dru Ann Friend
Rolla, KS
Dru Ann Friend, age 84, of Rolla, Kansas died January 15, 2011 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart, Kansas. She was born November 1, 1926 in Dennison, Texas the daughter of James Claude and Catherine (Crocket) Smithson. Dru was a second grade teacher and farm wife. She married Charles W. Friend in Dallas, Texas on June 2, 1951. She also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas. She attended Southwestern Bible Institute and Texas Christian University. Dru served on the Rolla City Council from 1977 through 1991. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Hugoton. For years she was active in MAPS, Mission America Placement Services, a service that coordinates volunteers to assist churches and ministry institutions with construction and evangelism projects. Dru was also known as “Grandma Dru” to a lot of friends in Rolla. Survivors include her husband Charles of the home; son, Clark Friend and wife Brenda of Satanta, Kansas; daughter, Janice Hollis and husband Michael of Rolla; sister, Phoebe Wilson of Mesa, Arizona; two grandchildren, Houston Friend, Shome Day and husband Cody; three great-grandchildren, Zachery, Zander and Zayden Day. Dru is preceded in death by her parents; son, Carson Friend; daughter-in-law, Donna Friend; granddaughter, Christy Friend; and brother, James Smithson. Visitation: 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart, Kansas. Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Rolla, Kansas with Reverend Sandy Ferguson officiating. Interment: Rolla Cemetery in Rolla, Kansas. Memorials may be given to MAPS in Springfield, Illinois in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
