Kurt Wiegel
Golden, CO
Kurt Wiegel, 84, passed away January 13, 2010 at the Lutheran Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. He was born February 24, 1926 in Hooker, Oklahoma to Lynn and Walter Wiegel and grew up on a farm Northwest of Hooker. He attended school in Adams, Optima, Hooker and Hugoton, living part of the time with his grandparents in Hooker. He entered the service in 1944 at age 18 and served as a Storekeeper T, Second Class in the Navy until 1946. He was stationed at the Naval Landing Force Equipment Depot in San Diego, California and also at the U.S. Naval Supply Center at Pearl Harbor. After returning from the service, he received his GED from Hugoton High School and began farming, which he continued for almost 40 years. He married Nora Lee Miller on October 1, 1950 in Hooker, where they made their home. In 1961, they moved to his grandparent's old dairy farm east of town and lived there until 1989. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a member of the Elks and enjoyed family and friends in Hooker for many years. In 1989, they moved to Guymon, Oklahoma where Kurt was employed by Oklahoma Panhandle State University for 10 years. He had many friends at the college and was respected and liked by everyone he met. In May of 2010, he moved to Golden, Colorado where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law. Kurt enjoyed yearly family trips to the mountains, especially Red River, New Mexico and then later to Golden, Colorado. He enjoyed driving over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, visiting the Grand Lake Lodge and the beautiful flowers and streams in Breckinridge. He also enjoyed going to the theatre in Denver to see Phantom of the Opera, visiting the train museum, riding the Royal Gorge train and the Georgetown train, going out for a good steak and watching any kind of western on TV. Preceding him in death are his parents Lynn and Walter Wiegel, wife Lee Wiegel, step-sister Lamoyne Hubbard and his oldest daughter Alana Wiegel. Survivors include his youngest daughter, Dana VonFeldt and her husband Jason of Golden, Colorado and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Griffin and her husband Derek of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22nd at the First Baptist Church in Hooker with Rev. Tim Brittain officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery under the direction of Roberts Brothers Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Hooker Cemetery Fund or Guymon Home Health Care and Hospice in care of the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 745, Hooker, OK 73945.
