Shirley Y. Monroe

Ulysses, KS

Shirley Monroe, age 85, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, April 07, 2011 at The Legacy at Park View in Ulysses, Kansas.  She was born November 13, 1925 in Hutchinson, Kansas the daughter of Carol C. and Thelma (Harmon) Parks.


Shirley, a homemaker, lived in Ulysses, Ness City, Holly, Colorado and Hutchinson.  On June 9, 1945 she married Earl R. Monroe Jr. in Maddison, Wisconsin.  She was a proof reader for the Ulysses News.  After retirement she worked at Kep’s Toggery in Ulysses.  Shirley was a member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star #471, American Legion Auxiliary Post #79, and Sweet Adeline’s.  She also sang at weddings and funerals for over 40 years. 


She is survived by her two daughters, Marty Kirk of Burneyville, Oklahoma, Michelle Bultman and husband Mark of Ulysses, Kansas; five grandchildren, Jodi Flores, Hattie Wiginton, Mark Bultman Jr., Marc Johnson, Melissa Cribb; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua Flores, Maison Wiginton and Aniston Wiginton. 


Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Monroe Jr.; son, Michael Monroe; brother, Harmon C. Parks; and grandson Michael Todd Black.


Funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Bill Harrold and Pastor Kelly Gindlesberger officiating.  Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.  Friends may call Monday, April 11, 2011 from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.  Memorial contributions may be given to the Legacy at Park View or the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS  67880.
