Lacy Garcia of Lakin and Katie Hart of Hugoton are representing Seward
County Community College/Area Technical School as Kansas Corps Volunteer
Campus Leaders for the 2009-10 school year.
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engages Americans
in intensive service to meet the nation¹s critical needs in education,
public safety, health and environment.
Throughout the year, these two students will be looking for students who
would like to assist them with their volunteer projects that will be good
for the community and Kansas.
³I am looking forward to helping as many people as possible in the
community,² said Garcia. ³I have always enjoyed doing community service and
being selected is a great honor.
One of their first volunteer projects was in Greensburg, Kansas, where they
helped rebuild parts of the community.
³The trip to Greensburg was such a great experience,² Garcia said. ³I had
gone before to help clean up right after the tornado hit, and to see how
much progress has been made is fantastic. While in Greensburg we planted
trees, moved mulch, and I even learned how to spackle a house. It was a
fantastic experience and I'm glad I was apart of it.²
Through the college¹s student government association, Garcia said she
learned about the scholarship program that helps with community service.
³Since I have always enjoyed helping others and doing community service I
decided to apply for the scholarship.
The two volunteers will next help coordinate service activities on Kansas
Day 2010 in Topeka.
